Our company is community-powered—it's our biggest focus. The department is the entire company. And the role will report directly to me.

Ship 30 for 30 is the fastest-growing community-powered course on the internet.

And we are looking for a Head of Community to join our small team to take significant ownership of our community strategy as we scale to 2023 and beyond.

Head of Community Job Mission

  1. Create hiring plan and hire early community team within first 6 months
    1. You will start the job as the leading member of the community team with the goal over time  to build out a 3-5 person community management team. You will have significant ownership over the community management delegation strategy, working closely with Dickie.
  2. Create and oversee data-driven engagement & retention strategies to increase student success within Ship 30 and The Captain’s Table
    • You will develop KPIs and dashboards that will be the north star of your engagement efforts. These dashboards will include things like student attendance, course completion, monthly churn & ascension rates, community participation, and more. You will provide weekly reports of these numbers to Dickie with action items to improve each metric.
  3. Actively engage in community channels to encourage conversation, course completion, and connection between members of the Ship 30 & Captain’s Table communities (while also building a team of community support managers to help you)
    • You will be the most active member in both the Ship 30 and Captain’s Table Circle community. Your biggest focus will be to make sure every community members gets timely answers to their questions, celebrations of their wins, and a nudge in the right direction when they feel stuck. Over time, you will transition this responsibility to dedicated community engagement specialists.
  4. Own user research strategy for community; ensure community member feedback is continuously collected and incorporated into community strategy
    • You will have ownership over creating the strategy for incorporating member feedback. This could include things like 1:1 weekly calls with various members, community feedback office hours, etc. You will provide a periodic report to Dickie with takeaways and action items sourced from these calls.
  5. Manage a student CRM with monthly direct reach outs to check in, encourage progress, and make connections within The Captain’s Table
    • You will oversee the student success CRM that gives a snapshot into the likelihood of churn & ascension based on your KPIs. This CRM will provide guidance for your direct reach out efforts to at-risk students and ready-to-ascend students. Over time, you will transition these direct reachouts to dedicated community engagement specialists.
  6. Create and lead new community initiatives like physical product swag, and in-person events
    • As the Ship 30 & Captain’s Table community grows, you will lead new initiatives to further bridge the digital & physical community world. This will include creating & managing physical product swag (stickers, mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, water bottles, etc.) as well as managing and coordinating in-person events.

The ideal Head of Community has the following competencies & character traits

  • You have a passion for online communities with significant experience running and managing them in the past. Ideally, you’ve learned the ins and outs of successful community engagement and written about your strategies publicly.
  • You have at least 3-5 years of internet community building & engagement experience.
  • You have experience in building and managing a small team of direct reports to implement a community engagement, ascension, and retention strategy.
  • You have a high level of comfort acting as the face of a brand on video, public interviews, and public profiles.
  • You are an empathetic, enthusiastic, and extroverted individual who could talk to people all day.
  • You are a data-driven community manager, with a passion for building connections and laser-focused on actions that move the needle.
  • You are detail-oriented and organized with the ability to create and manage systems and provide clear reports to others.
  • You are an efficient, asynchronous written communicator who enjoys a lean operating environment with minimal meetings.
  • You take ownership as a proactive problem solver, identifying problems and crafting end-to-end solutions on your own.
  • You have technical ability with basic no-code tools like Zapier and Airtable.
  • You have basic design capabilities in tools like Canva.
  • You have a passion for writing & online business and are excited to help others unlock opportunities from these.

Compensation and employment structure

  • The role will start will a competitively compensated 5-hour community audit project, after which formal hiring will take place.
  • We are sourcing candidates interested in both contract work and W2 work and can create the package that best fits your situation.
  • Compensation: $70-$90k per year
  • Benefits: W2 employees will receive medical & dental stipends, minimum 3 weeks of vacation + learning, health, and remote-work stipends.
