About the role

Y Combinator (YC) is seeking a dedicated individual to strengthen and grow YC’s alumni network of over 6,000 founders. As the Alumni Community Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the post-batch YC experience for our founders and Group Partners by fostering meaningful connections and support for YC startups.

In this role, you will be responsible for strategically increasing engagement through on‐ and off‐site events designed to further develop the YC community. Your focus will be on running repeatable and scalable programs primarily in San Francisco, with some occasion to travel as needed. You will work closely with both YC Group Partners to drive engagement, and will continually iterate to improve programming and the founder experience.

Additionally, you will facilitate and support our alumni in organizing their own events, employing representative selection, event promotion, and budgeting.

Examples of things you might do in this role:

  • Run meetups, reunions and other gatherings of 50+ alumni founders and YC partners for networking and knowledge sharing at YC’s Pier 70 office

  • Organize small-group dinners with alumni to establish support circles of founders both at YC’s offices and locations around SF

  • Develop and execute a playbook for selecting alumni representatives, and build guidelines and budget to support alumni-run events on an annual basis

  • Using qualitative and quantitative data from the alumni database, surveys, and other sources to evaluate effectiveness of programming, and adjust and/or pivot as needed

  • Manage communications with alumni regarding YC programs and events, as well as things happening in the community.

What are we looking for

This role is ideal for someone passionate about startups and eager to delve deeper into the YC startup ecosystem and support our founders. You understand that IRL events are a fundamental way to drive engagement and build community. You want to foster genuine connections with our community and YC itself, and create new ways to support our founders and their startups, as well as YC's sub-communities.

More specifically:

  • You have 3+ years of experience working with alumni and/or executive groups, and demonstrate good judgment in providing service and support accordingly.

  • You have run 15+ in-person events in a calendar year for the purpose of alumni/community development – including mixers, meetups, executive dinners and possibly even smaller-budget conferences.

  • You have examples of strong organizational and communication skills – specifically with Google Docs and Sheets – both for internal communication and alumni engagement.

  • You are available to work regularly on evenings and (rarely) on weekends, to support your own community events. (That said, hours are flexible to accommodate time spent outside of standard office hours.)

  • You are excited to be an IC and run 2-3 programs and events each week, with no additional staff or support.

Every employee at YC has a lot of individual responsibility and access to sensitive information, so we need to hire people we can trust. Your ability to make good trade-offs and exercise good judgment is particularly important to us.

Join us in shaping the future of YC and making a lasting impact on the startup community!
